Open letter to the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel and the President of the Republic of France Emanuel Macron:
Mme. Chancellor, Mr. President,
I write this open letter to you on behalf of Mehdi Logunov, an 85-year-old Ukrainian citizen, held in prison in Kharkiv for his political views, which makes him one of the world’s oldest political prisoners.
Logunov a scientist with more than a dozen patents he has invented and had been an outspoken critic of the post-Maidan regime for many years. He spoke out against the unconstitutional Maidan coup, and had refused to denounced the freedom-fighters of the Donbass republics as terrorists, because they didn’t accept the post-Maidan government (that came to power by shooting their own supporters in the back). Logunov always insisted that the war in Donbass is a Ukrainian civil war – something that OCSE acknowledges by confirming that the overwhelming majority of casualties on both sides are Ukrainian citizens.
Because of his brave and outspoken political stance, Logunov was often a target of threats by nationalists and the Poroshenko regime. Finally, when the regime couldn’t scare Logunov into silence, the government fabricated a criminal case against him.
Logunov was designing waste disposal plants to be built in the European Union. For this end, he talked to many people inquiring about techniques being used in Ukraine. The Poroshenko regime used this and SBU charged him with treason.
Logunov was detained by the SBU on 17.08.2017. After being held in jail on false charges for over 2 years, on 18.11.2019 he was sentenced to 12 years in prison – a life sentence for the 85-year-old Logunov!
During the entire time of his detention, countless journalists, politicians and activists called for the government to release Logunov. However, the Poroshenko regime was clearly punishing the prominent scientist for his political position.
When Volodymyr Zelensky was elected president by almost 75% of Ukrainians, most of those people hoped that the new president would stop political persecution against Logunov and others like him. However, that has not been the case, and the so called “Ze team” has continued the anti-Ukrainian and anti-democratic policies of his predecessor.
I and many others have tried to call for the new president to release the 85-year-old political prisoner, but once again to no avail. I personally even wrote an open letter to him, but Logunov is still in prison and his time is running out.
So, I, Oleksiy Zhuravko, two-time deputy of the Verhovna Rada of Ukraine, a person with first degree disabilities (I was born with no legs and only 1 arm), and former ombudsman for the disabled for the government of Ukraine, call on you, Mme. Chancellor and Mr. President to use your (unfortunately overwhelming) influence on my country, to convince president Zelensky to release Mehdi Logunov and other political prisoners immediately and in the future to abandon Poroshenko’s strategy of imprisonment and intimidation and to finally get our country on the road to peace, democracy and consolidation – something at least 75% of people who voted for Zelensky want!
Sincerely,
Oleksiy Zhuravko
