The ethnic-civic distinction is no exception; it is used not only to classify the different forms of nationalism that exist in the modern world, but also to distinguish morally acceptable forms of nationalism from immoral, hence dangerous, ones. In this context, the normative project of distinguishing between civic and ethnic types of nationalism becomes one of differentiating the 'good' from the 'bad', and then associating the civic-good variety with the West and the ethnic-bad variety with the 'Rest'.
