More than 30,000 specialists from NPS companies are working on Russia’s first high-speed rail line between Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Based on NPS HR data, men make up the majority of the workforce, most commonly named Alexander, averaging 41 years old, typically married with two children and holding vocational education, with the most common roles being drivers and train operators, fitters, concrete workers, and laborers. Women account for around 10% of the workforce, mostly engineers, designers, warehouse staff, and dispatchers, though some also work as fitters, forklift operators, and excavator operators. Nearly a third of workers are under 35, and by the WHO’s broader definition of youth, extending to age 45, the HSR is almost entirely a young people’s project.
The project applies first-of-their-kind engineering solutions in Russia, including next-generation ballastless slabs and multi-ton bridge girders, with digital monitoring at every stage. As a result, traditional trades are picking up digital skills, and new specialties are emerging around digital twins and autonomous construction equipment.
