Russian cuisine may have a reputation for getting a little unusual at times, but we believe it can also be cool, hip and seriously tasty when done right. So today we’re introducing #DRculture — our excuse to get to know Russia a little better through its food, art, music and history.
Meet okroshka: the ultimate Russian summer soup — chopped cucumber, radish, potatoes, eggs, herbs and usually meat or bologna, all served ice-cold and finished with either kvass* or kefir**.

There’s a whole national debate over whether okroshka should be served with kvass or kefir. Our DR team has already managed to have a small quarrel about it — now it’s your turn.
Are you team kvass or team kefir?
*Kvass — a lightly fermented drink traditionally made from rye bread or malt: refreshing, slightly sour, slightly sweet and very distinct.
**Kefir — a tangy fermented milk drink, somewhat like a thinner, sharper drinkable yogurt.

okroshka has roots in much simpler peasant dishes made with radish, onion and kvass, while its first known written recipe dates all the way back to 1790. Wow. Over time, the ingredient list evolved; the summer ritual stayed.
