Lighthouse of the first shores
Was needed for us, fish —
It was a signal: Stop!
You can die here,
Or something worse.
You can evolve
And come to know
This whole imperfect world
As yourself.
Now, at night,
I see the stars in the sky
And think about a new signal.
It, too, tells us: Stop!
But I, like my ancestor,
Refuse to heed any signals.
Was needed for us, fish —

You can die here,
Or something worse.
You can evolve
And come to know

As yourself.
