installation on the exhibition “artists against the kremlin III: memory remains”

the installation is dedicated to the “immortal regiment”—a grassroots movement commemorating the victims and participants of world war II that was partially co-opted by the state and transformed into one of the key political rituals of putin’s russia. the “immortal regiment” exemplifies how the space of historical memory can give place to a triumphalist myth that displaces memory itself.

the “immortal regiment” originated in tomsk in 2012; it was also partially there—in critical response to it—that the party of the dead emerged a few years later.

the “immortal regiment” brings the deceased participants of the war out onto the streets. but what if we give a voice not only to those victorious dead who suit the state’s wishes, but to the dead in general?

инсталляция на выставке «artists against the kremlin III: memory remains»

инсталляция посвящена «бессмертному полку» – низовому движению по коммеморации жертв и участников 2 мировой войны, частично захваченному государством и превратившемуся в один из главных политических ритуалов путинской россии. на примере «бессмертного полка» можно наблюдать, как место исторической памяти даёт место также и для вымещающего память победоносного мифа.

«бессмертный полк» возник в 2012 году в томске – там же (отчасти) как критический ответ на него несколько лет спустя появилась и партия мёртвых.

«бессмертный полк» выводит на улицу умерших участников войны. но почему бы не дать слово не только удобным для государства мертвецам-победителям, но и всем мёртвым вообще?

Отзываемся на призыв солидарности и приглашаем вас поучаствовать в шахматном онлайн-турнире «Шах тюрьме» в поддержку политзаключённых по Тюменскому делу. ♟

Tonight, we open Emigration to the Future with a coffin in the sky.

At 18:00, Maxim Evstropov — artist, philosopher and founder of the Party of the Dead — opens the festival with Necro Kite Festival, a workshop and performance in the Lidl car park.

The performance grows from Russian cosmism, which imagined defeating death, resurrecting the dead and expanding human life into space. Evstropov turns that enormous promise into an absurd collective gesture: together, we will build a coffin kite and launch it into the Berlin sky.

The Party of the Dead works with necro-activism, Dadaist absurdity and black humour, confronting the political appropriation of death, memory and the future.

Come to the opening. Help the coffin take flight.

The festival opens today.

Friday 7 August, 18:00 — Lidl car park, Reinickendorfer Straße / Wiesenstraße 41. We open with a kite festival, outdoors, weather permitting: Necro Kite Festival, Maxim Evstropov (Workshop & performance).

Before that: talks on forever chemicals (10:00, Quarteera) and geoscience in wine (14:00, Chto Delat). After the opening: another talk (18:00, Chto Delat), then videos and a play at ExBrache into the night — Arrival (Andrey Shepel), Digital Emigration (Marat Khuzin), No Return (Anton Ketov, Jana Safronova, Danila Safronov).

Three days, seven places, over thirty projects across Berlin-Wedding. Free entry everywhere.

Come tonight at 18:00. The rest of the weekend follows the same rhythm — full programme on the site.

👀 POPULAR SCIENCE — SMART EMIGRATION TO THE FUTURE

Lectures at Chto Delat and at Quarteera, Arkonaplatz 5. Scientists who left home and kept working at the edge of their fields, talking without the jargon: molecular chirality, genes, the Einstein Telescope for gravitational waves, quantum games played with a pencil and a sheet of squared paper. Each talk runs 45 to 90 minutes, with a discussion afterwards.
