"In our project, there's a significant element of randomness, and technology acts as a third artist: the program mixes everything in a cool way, making it exciting to work with"

In a recent AMA, we spoke with multidisciplinary artists Andy Artyuhin & Alina Lutaeva about 3D scanning and lettering, the role of technology in creating art objects, and how moving to Paris opened up new opportunities in art.

The artists shared insights about their new Mechanical Sentiments collection, mint of which will soon take place on Sense, and shared their inspirations and advice for emerging creators.

Andy Artyuhin

In 2021, I made my first experiment with 3D printing, 3D scanning, and AR. Back then, it was more of an experiment—I realized that objects don’t always look the way you expect them to, but now everything has become much easier. For 3D scanning, all you need is the smartphone with the LiDAR function.

Alina Lutaeva

From the beginning of my work, I started using text in art, and I’ve always been interested in how the same words are interpreted differently by people. At one of my first solo exhibitions, I used mirrors with simple phrases like "I’m doing great" or "What is going on?", which reflected fleeting emotions.

The scanning process is a kind of performance: the person stands still, not talking or smiling, and you look very closely at them.

Alina Lutaeva

The main advice is to test your ideas right away because perfectionism often prevents their realization. It’s better to do something imperfectly than to postpone it. The first steps don’t matter; the important thing is to keep moving forward. Only through trial can you understand what works, and it’s crucial not to stop.

Andy Artyuhin

Our collection is essentially "cubism" but with new tools. Picasso and cubism aimed to create an object in space by drawing it from different angles—side, top, and bottom. Our collection also uses this approach, but technology introduces its own solutions.
