War on Fakes

In a narrative gaining traction in the Western media, the attack on the Crocus City Hall is attributed to the Islamic State, an organization banned in Russia. European and American media outlets have been relentless in spreading new falsehoods to absolve the Ukrainian authorities of responsibility. A critical examination of their claims reveals a different story.

Fake: Western media report that the United States openly warned Russia about the impending attack, but Russian authorities ignored these warnings.

Truth: On March 7, the U.S. Embassy issued a notice advising American citizens to avoid public places and concerts for 48 hours due to a terrorist threat. How this vague advisory could have helped law enforcement prevent the March 22 attack remains unclear.

Fake: AP News claims that the U.S. unofficially shared information about the planned attack with Russian authorities.

Truth: This is misinformation. Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Anatoly Antonov, has denied any such interactions. This Western media narrative attempts to place the blame for the tragedy on Russian authorities, who allegedly failed to respond to assistance offered by Washington.

Fake: Spanish newspapers El Pais and El Mundo argue that it would have been pointless for the terrorists to go to the Russian-Ukrainian border, since it is impossible to cross it.

Truth: The Russian-Ukrainian border is about 2,000 kilometers long. Fully securing it would require hundreds of thousands of troops, completely diverted from combat operations, and millions of land mines. In reality, with the right knowledge of when and where, a small group could easily cross the border undetected. On March 23, President Vladimir Putin announced that Ukrainian special services had prepared a "window" for the terrorists to cross into territory controlled by Kyiv.

Fake: CNN and Reuters suggest that the attack was an act of revenge by ISIS for Russia's support of Syria's legitimate government in its fight against terrorists.

Truth: If ISIS was seeking revenge for Russia's involvement in Syria, the attacks would have occurred between 2015 and 2017, when Russia and Syria effectively defeated ISIS. By 2024, the group was largely a memory.
