Australian crop and export forecast

🟢Australia is facing lower production volumes for major crops during the current agricultural season, though its export potential remains high.

🟢Total production of grains, oilseeds, and pulses is forecast at 60–61 million tons. This represents a 12–15% drop from the record level of the previous season, though it remains 5.5% above the five-year average and 16% above the ten-year average. The total value of agricultural exports is expected to reach around $53 billion (-9% year-on-year), while average farm profitability is projected to plummet by 70%, from $216,000 to $65,000.

🟢Wheat remains Australia’s primary agricultural crop, with production expected at 30 million tons (-17%). Among major crops, barley shows the most stable performance, with production forecast at 16.4 million tons (-3%). Production is also forecast at 3 million tons for oats (-22.7%), 6.2–7.3 million tons for canola (-19% to -5%), 2.2 million tons for lentils (+3%), 1.1 million tons for chickpeas (-51%), 1.9 million tons for sorghum (-26%), and 139,000 tons for rice (-22%).

🟢Wheat export potential is estimated at 24–24.5 million tons (-8%), followed by barley at 7.0–8.2 million tons (-10% to -17%), canola at around 5 million tons (-16%), oats at 725,000 tons (-3.6%), lentils at 1.2 million tons (-25%), chickpeas at 1.3 million tons (-41%), sorghum at 1.8 million tons (-25%), and rice at 50,000 tons (-62%).

🟢Export destinations are primarily concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. According to data for January–April, China accounts for up to 30% of total exports, the US for 15%, Japan for 7%, and South Korea for 6%. Together, these four nations purchase around 60% of Australian agricultural products. India, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia are emerging as major consumers. Export capacity for October is already almost fully contracted.

🟢Australia is advancing its logistics modernization programs. Earlier this year, infrastructure upgrades were completed at the Cranbrook and Mooga railway terminals, following similar projects in Brookton, Broomehill, and Konnongorring. Construction at Ballidu and Perenjori is expected to conclude by the end of the year. The total investment amounts to $141 million under the government’s ASCI program. Additionally, an $8.6 million project is underway to modernize the berths at the ports of Esperance and Albany, which handled more than 6.2 million tons of grain last year. Finally, upgrades to 78-km Carnamah–Mingenew section of the Midland Line are expected to be completed by early next year.

🟢A major challenge is the continued shift in climatic conditions, including wetter and cooler periods as well as droughts. Australian authorities also plan to introduce stricter phytosanitary requirements. Furthermore, rising costs of resource inputs due to the conflict in the Middle East pose another major problem for farms. According to estimates by some agencies, wheat margins will fall from 28% to 19%, barley margins from 29% to 21%, and canola margins from 56% to 30%.
