🇮🇷Iran streamlines transit along the North-South Corridor

🟢Amid restrictions on cargo transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran is streamlining the transit of cargo through its territory along the International North-South Transport Corridor. Starting in October, the customs service will coordinate the work of border police, transport, sanitary, and other agencies to integrate cargo processing, inspections, and data exchange into a single system.

🟢The reform aims to reduce border crossing times and the number of formalities, while preserving the existing mandates of each agency. Meanwhile, Iran is already synchronizing procedures with neighboring countries: electronic data exchange is being developed with Azerbaijan, while a simplified Norduz–Meghri customs corridor has been agreed with Armenia, featuring the preliminary exchange of information and a gradual transition from paper documents to electronic processing.

🟢For Iran, border waiting times directly affect transit costs and the competitiveness of land routes. Tehran is simultaneously improving the efficiency of routes through the Caucasus and Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as the northern route to Russia, thereby strengthening the country’s role as a link between the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Persian Gulf ports.

🟢Faster procedures will bolster the International North-South Transport Corridor, where performance depends on ports and railways as much as on the coordinated operation of border crossings, customs, and road transport. According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, 664,400 tons were transported along the western rail route in 2025, 1.8 million tons along the Trans-Caspian route, while maritime transportation reached 2.8 million tons. Significant growth was also recorded in the first months of 2026.

🟢Reducing processing times will allow the capacity of existing infrastructure to be increased without requiring immediate physical expansion. For Tehran, this means higher transit revenues and lower domestic trade costs. Its significance for Russian-Iranian cooperation lies in an opportunity to make the existing route faster and cheaper.

🟢Overall, Iran is seeking to turn overland transit into a more sustainable alternative to maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Streamlined customs procedures could improve pricing and boost cargo volumes, strengthen the northern route to Russia, and increase Iran’s importance in the regional transport network.
