From tiny lasers to giant adventures, here’s what’s been happening at ITMO this week:

🔬 ITMO scientists have created microspherical resonators that amplify light by hundreds of times; applications include medical diagnostics and even special anti-counterfeiting markings.

🍩 ITMO and Yandex Education are taking a food truck on a 4,000+ km journey across Russia, bringing along donuts, lectures, games, and even a chance to win a PlayStation.

🏃 The Russian Premier League’s 2026/27 season is underway, and we’re revisiting three iconic moments in Russian football history.

ITMO-trained team wins 4 medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics 🏆

A team of Russian school students secured two gold and two silver medals at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The competition brought together 386 participants from 97 countries.

As always, the national team is coached by Andrey Stankevich, the dean of ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. Congratulations to the entire crew!

Cybersecurity, hands-on projects, and a journey from Syria to ITMO 🎓

Ahmad Wakkaf has just completed his Master’s in information security at ITMO. Here’s what he has to say about the experience:

The professors [at ITMO] are highly knowledgeable and bring real-world experience into the classroom through courses in cryptography, risk management, operating systems, and machine learning. The hands-on practical projects I’ve worked on have been highly valuable for building my skills.

From breakthrough science to robot musicians — here’s your week at ITMO!

🔬 ITMO, Skoltech, and HSE scientists have created the first electrically powered perovskite laser as a more cost-efficient solution for optical chips, sensors, and quantum devices.

🎓 In 2026, ITMO has received 32,000+ applications to Bachelor’s programs (150% more than last year!) and welcomed a record number of contest winners in St. Petersburg.

🤖 ITMO’s Youth Robotics Lab unveiled its most complex robot yet, EMMA, at RobotChallenge 2026 in Beijing. The violin-playing robot can tune its own violin and repeat melodies “by ear.”

Hailing from Lebanon, Abedrahman is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in robotics and AI at ITMO with a clear vision: using technology to solve real‑world problems.

My long-term vision of making an impact through technology keeps me going. The support of my family back home is also a constant source of strength. And being part of a community of international students at ITMO, all sharing this journey, reminds me that every challenge is not an obstacle, but a step forward.
