An incredible shout-out from Patreon’s founder about the impact of technology on the creative process. But that’s not why I’m sharing it. I’m sharing it because the level of empathy, understanding, and the inspiration that naturally emerges from it is simply off the charts. Highly recommended.

🙀 Creativity Has Been Slopped

👉 What is the creative process?

Maybe it begins as an intuitive inner intention that slowly develops, evolves, and eventually finds its form through the act of creation itself. That intention is shaped by our experience, tools, techniques, and visual vocabulary.

Then something strange happens. Giving form to that intention means navigating an incredible amount of chaos. Every step introduces endless variables and happy accidents. Working with that chaos is often the most rewarding part of creating because it brings back that childlike feeling of discovery and genuine curiosity. For me, that’s the entire reason to make anything at all.

Think how much humanity has created by exploring that chaos.

Shaping this intention can take years, even decades. It changes as we change. It evolves alongside our experiences, our philosophy, and the way we see the world.

👉 Can you fully define in advance something that can only emerge through the act of creating?

I think this is one of the main reasons why so much AI generated work feels shallow. It’s also where the sameness of AI slop comes from. The aesthetics that make up our visual vocabulary begin to endlessly replicate themselves, slowly losing their uniqueness.

When we skip the creative process, we’re left with only intention and taste. We lose the most important part: the feeling of genuine discovery, the sense of play, and the desire to experiment.

Many of my projects exist only because of unpredictable experiments. I could never have designed them by writing the final outcome in advance because I simply couldn’t have imagined the form they would eventually take.

☎️ So here’s my takeaway. The tools we have today are incredible, and their potential is enormous. Just don’t deprive yourself of the joy of the process. Even the smallest amount of manual play with AI generated results immediately leads to far more interesting outcomes.

Peace 💭

Creative Coding

How I raised the bar in Creative Coding

After the success of Lonely Village, I wanted to take on a project that would raise the bar even higher. I was looking to move beyond familiar solutions and create something more ambitious, both algorithmically and visually.

That’s how ABANDONED TEMPLE 廃寺 began.

The goal was relatively simple: explore the aesthetics of East Asian architecture, introduce a stronger sense of depth, and still preserve the feeling of a hand-drawn artwork. After gathering references, the composition gradually took shape: a pagoda surrounded by ever-changing landscapes, with a flowering tree in the foreground.

Every element was generated through its own set of algorithms. Rather than creating a single illustration, I was building a system capable of producing thousands of variations. That was also the greatest challenge: the more freedom you give an algorithm, the easier it becomes for the image to descend into chaos. Most of the development time was spent not on adding new features, but on finding the balance between variety and visual coherence.

I spent roughly a month doing nothing but tuning parameters and refining generation ranges in search of consistently strong compositions. Unexpected outputs still appeared, but the amount of visual noise decreased dramatically.

The release exceeded every expectation. All 128 editions sold out in roughly five minutes. The works quickly found their way into collections, the project was discussed throughout the generative art community, and for me it became an important milestone in understanding what creative coding could be.

Then came the crash.

AI-powered creative tools were already appearing on the horizon, and I had no ideas that felt capable of matching what I had achieved with ABANDONED TEMPLE.

But that is a story for another time
