▪️ If you look at modern society, you can notice that the statement is more often than not appears to be true. I think it’s partly due to the Internet culture where any self-expression is inevitably mocked or hated by a certain number of people, which leads to the loss of authenticity where you tend to stick to sarcasm or post-meta-irony as a means of self-defense.
▪️ But the second reason that I also find plausible is that humans as a species have grown, and now more and more people prefer to live in the real world, rather than fantasies and ideals. They take life for what it is, and that, believe me, isn’t a pretty picture. So irony and alienation is just a new defense mechanism serving as a replacement for strong beliefs, traditional ideals, and children’s simplicity. It kind of lets you live through all the bullshit without diving headlong into complete nihilism, in my opinion.
▪️ There’s a third reason, of course, which in turn has two reasons why I’m not going to write about it. Firstly, it’s not a global reason, which makes it true only for certain locations… and secondly, I happen to live in one such location…
