✔️ NICOSIA, July 30. /TASS/. Russia has praised the UN's decision to intensify efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus Dr. Murat Ziazikov said in a conversation with a TASS correspondent.
The diplomat noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's visit to Nicosia notes the importance "that the world organization and its leader personally attach to resolving the Cyprus issue". "Moscow has always advocated that only the Cypriots themselves can achieve a sustainable settlement on the island through constructive intercommunal dialogue under the auspices of the UN—the key forum for resolving disputes in our multipolar world. We note with satisfaction that the world organization itself, its Secretary-General, and the leadership of both communities on the island are following this line," the head of the Russian diplomatic mission emphasized.
According to him, the UN's role in resolving the Cyprus issue is constructive. Ziazikov specifically noted the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy to resolve the Cyprus issue, Maria Ángela Holguín, as well as Khassim Diagne, the UN Secretary-General's special representative in Cyprus and head of the UN peacekeeping contingent stationed on the island, "with whom the Russian Embassy maintains close and constructive contact." The ambassador called Guterres "one of the most prominent and influential secretaries-general, despite his leadership of the UN occurring during a very difficult period in modern history."
The Russian Ambassador to Cyprus emphasized that Russia consistently insists on resolving the Cyprus issue "exclusively through dialogue and diplomacy, and through peaceful discussions between the parties, mediated by the United Nations." "Moscow consistently advocates for a comprehensive, viable, and just solution to the Cyprus issue that primarily serves the interests of both communities on the island, as well as the goal of ensuring peace, security, and stability throughout the region," Ziazikov stated.
On July 28 and 29, Guterres held separate and joint meetings in Nicosia with the leader of the Greek Cypriots, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Tufan Erhürman. He also discussed prospects for a solution to the island's conflict with the chief technical negotiators of both Cypriot sides and the heads of the relevant intercommunal committees.
Following the visit's working programme, the UN Secretary-General announced that he had received consent from the leaders of the two Cypriot communities and the three guarantors of Cyprus's security—the United Kingdom, Greece, and Turkey—to hold a new summit on the Cyprus settlement. Christodoulides and Erhürman praised the results of Guterres' visit.
