According to Sophocli, the process of raising relations to the diplomatic level itself included a short transition period involving the Soviet diplomatic mission in Athens. "The Cypriot side received a message from Moscow stating that the duties of the first head of the Soviet diplomatic mission in Cyprus were temporarily assigned to the Soviet Ambassador to Greece, Mikhail Sergeev (1903-1993), who served concurrently for several months. This period lasted only a short time, then an independent diplomatic mission was opened in Nicosia, with diplomat Pavel Yermoshin (1907-1989) becoming the first Soviet ambassador to Cyprus," the TASS source reported.
He noted that, although in recent years the bilateral political relations between Cyprus and Russia have perhaps been going through one of the more difficult periods in their history under the influence of external factors, diplomats from both countries, including Russian Ambassador in Cyprus Murat Ziazikov, are making every effort to preserve and further develop the most active contacts between Russians and Cypriots, and to ensure that these contacts remain as friendly and substantive as possible.
“These relations are rooted in a centuries-old historical, spiritual and value-based foundation, which can be regarded as a guarantee that the bonds of friendship between Cyprus and Russia will only continue to grow stronger,” Sophoclis Sophocli emphasized.
