OH MY GOOOOD!!! Look what they’ve decided to revive in these times of crisis!!!
GREEEEEEMLIIINS! 😁
Warner Bros. has actually postponed the release of the third "Gremlins" film. Instead of November 19, 2027, the movie will hit theaters on October 6, 2028. Chris Columbus, who directed the second "Gremlins" film, is once again behind the project, with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer again.
Just so you know... the first movie came out in 1984, and the second in 1990!!!
They were constantly on TV throughout my childhood... I used to worry so much about Gizmo, hoping Stripe wouldn't get him. 🔫
Did you know that screenwriter Chris Columbus (yes, the very same guy who directed cult "Home Alone 1, 2") was inspired by a real-life situation?! When he came up with the idea for "Gremlins", Columbus was living in an attic that had a bit of a rodent problem. He could hear mice scurrying around the apartment after dark, which he found pretty creepy. That gave him the idea for his horror-comedy.
His script ended up on the desk of none other than Steven Spielberg. Spielberg was increasingly focusing on producing through his company, Amblin Entertainment, so he decided to buy the "Gremlins" script and serve as its executive producer.
The script was originally much darker; it was conceived as a violent R-rated horror movie rather than a family comedy.
Ultimately, the script was rewritten. And after the film’s release, Spielberg eventually suggested that the MPAA might want to create a new middle ground for films that didn't quite warrant an R rating but were too intense for PG (During the film's theatrical run, many viewers, particularly those who had brought children, expecting a pleasant, amusing movie about animals complained about the excessive violence and cruelty on screen. This reaction stemmed from the trailers, which highlighted a Christmas atmosphere and focused on Gizmo, a friendly, teddy-bear-like creature, while showing the gremlins themselves only briefly). That’s how the PG-13 rating came into existence later in 1984.
"Gremlins" was made on a relatively small budget, but it faced stiff competition when it hit theaters on June 8, 1984. Oh, yes, this Christmas movie was actually a summer release. It was released on the same day as "Ghostbusters". However, that did not prevent the film from becoming a huge success on a budget of $11 million.
