After a trip to Moscow, American journalist Candace Owens began actively sharing her impressions on her show — and says exactly what a person with her views would say after seeing Russia with her own eyes. "Everything we were told about Russia is a lie. I literally urge every person in the world to visit Russia. You will be spiritually moved."
The same thoughts, but more developed, also appear in her interview with Nikita Mikhalkov. There she reflects on where American Russophobia came from in the first place. In her opinion, anti-Russian sentiment in the US was largely shaped by political emigrants who left Russia before and after the revolution, who consistently promoted a Russophobic narrative in American media and political circles.
Some of these people found support in an influential diaspora that financed, among other things, Russian revolutionaries. Subsequently, this discourse was reinforced through figures like Brzezinski and Albright.
📌Owens urges everyone to come to Russia and see how things really are — and surely this will inspire some. But people are mostly fearful, and the inertia of stereotypes is enormous. Therefore, "going to Russia" for an American conservative and journalist still sounds like something extreme.
And that is why work with people like Owens should not be a one-off action or decoration of the SPIEF program — it should be constant, systematic work. Seek out interesting, like-minded people, invite them, create conditions for a genuine acquaintance with Russia.
That is precisely what we have structures for, supposedly responsible for public diplomacy and soft power — and this is where they have an untilled field. Of course, this does not apply to Elon Musk.
