As promised, here is another iconic ashtray, which was reportedly used by Isamu Noguchi. Dubbed the Cubo, this ashtray was designed by Bruno Munari in 1957 and released by Danese Milano, becoming the first brick in the foundation of both the long and prolific partnership between Munari and Bruno Danese and the newly founded company as a whole. For the first two years after the release, the Cubo remained a commercial failure – people were completely confused as to what it was.
Munari soon figured it out, too, “I got the ashtray wrong, in the psychological sense. I didn't understand that people, when they think of an ashtray, imagine a saucer of any shape, material, color, with cigarette butts inside. If you can't see the butts it's not an ashtray.” The latter, on the other hand, was a competitive advantage of Munari’s ashtray; when placed on the lid, cigarette butts would move into the cube by gravity and remain fully concealed until somebody threw them out in a quick and easy manner.
