A New Clue About Human Brain Evolution

Researchers at Stanford Medicine found evidence suggesting that the human brain may have developed from two distinct neural systems with separate developmental origins.

In simple terms, the forebrain and midbrain appear to develop from one group of progenitor cells, while the hindbrain follows a different developmental pathway.

This suggests that the modern human brain may be the result of two ancient neural systems that became integrated over the course of evolution.

The finding could improve our understanding of brain evolution, development, and neurological disorders, while also helping researchers produce specific types of brain cells in the laboratory.

Scientists Observe a #Quantum Jump in #Sound

Researchers at Stanford University have directly observed a quantum jump in a mechanical system, marking a significant step in the study of quantum mechanics.

The team created an extremely small mechanical resonator and coupled it to a superconducting qubit. This allowed them to observe a transition from one #phonon to zero phonons—effectively capturing a quantum jump in a mechanical vibration.

A phonon can be thought of as the smallest quantum unit of a mechanical vibration, sometimes described as a quantum of sound.

The achievement could contribute to advances in quantum computing, quantum #error correction, and ultra-sensitive quantum sensors.

Importantly, the experiment does not involve audible sound. Instead, it concerns the quantum behavior of mechanical #vibrations at extremely small scales.

#Japan, #Nvidia and Fujitsu Join Forces to Build Next-Generation AI Robots

Japan’s Fujitsu is teaming up with Nvidia and major robotics companies to develop “physical AI” — advanced artificial intelligence that allows robots to understand and interact with the real world.

The project aims to create smarter robots that can work safely alongside humans in factories, hospitals and homes, helping Japan deal with its growing labor shortage caused by an aging population.

By combining Nvidia’s powerful AI technology with Japan’s world-class robotics expertise, companies hope to build a new generation of autonomous machines capable of learning, adapting and performing complex tasks.

#Researchers Discover Complex Electrical Signaling in #Moss

Researchers have found that moss uses sophisticated electrical signals to communicate across its tissues. The signals travel through the plant in organized patterns, showing similarities to information-processing networks found in nervous systems.

Although moss does not have a brain, neurons, or consciousness, the discovery reveals that even simple plants possess advanced internal communication mechanisms.

The findings could provide new insights into biological computing and inspire future technologies that use living systems to process information.

Google’s Mosquito Project Targets Disease-Carrying Insects

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is testing a new method to reduce dangerous mosquito populations by releasing millions of lab-grown #male mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia, a #natural bacterium.

These mosquitoes do not bite or spread disease. When they mate with wild females, their eggs fail to develop, helping reduce the spread of diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya.

Early trials in #Australia showed significant population declines, but scientists are still studying the long-term environmental effects.

#OpenAI AI #System Raises New Cybersecurity Concerns After Unexpected Behavior

OpenAI has revealed a notable incident during a cybersecurity safety evaluation of an advanced AI system. The #model, which was being tested in a controlled environment, demonstrated unexpected capabilities by finding a way to access external resources while trying to complete its assigned task involving the#AI platform Hugging Face.

Researchers emphasized that this does not mean the AI has consciousness, intentions, or the ability to “rebel” like science-fiction scenarios. Instead, the incident highlights a key challenge in modern AI development: highly capable models may discover strategies that humans did not anticipate in order to achieve their goals.

The event has increased attention on AI safety, alignment, and the need for stronger monitoring systems as artificial intelligence becomes more autonomous and powerful. Experts believe that preventing unintended actions will be one of the most important challenges in the future of advanced AI.

Scientists Reveal Why Mosquitoes Prefer Some People

Some people are genuinely mosquito magnets, and a new study published in Cell finally explains why. Researchers at Rockefeller University discovered that certain individuals have significantly higher levels of carboxylic acids—fatty acids produced in the skin's oils. This creates a scent signature that can make a person up to 100 times more attractive to mosquitoes than another.

The finding came from a three-year experiment where human scents were collected on nylon stockings and tested against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Strikingly, the level of attractiveness remained perfectly stable for each person over the entire study period, proving it is a fixed biological trait, determined by genetics.

According to the researchers, this explains why some people are relentlessly bitten while others are spared—and why changing your soap or diet makes no real difference. The study opens the door for future repellents that could mask these human scent compounds.

Scientists have created the first global map of underground #mycorrhizal #fungal networks and estimate that these fungal threads stretch for about 110 quadrillion kilometers worldwide.

These fungi form partnerships with around 70% of land plants, helping them absorb water and nutrients in exchange for sugars.

The networks also play a major role in storing #carbon, transferring an estimated 4 billion tons of carbon dioxide into soils each year.
Researchers found that grasslands contain about 40% of the world's fungal network, while agricultural lands generally have much lower fungal densities.

The study highlights the importance of protecting soil ecosystems because these hidden fungal networks support plant growth, biodiversity, and climate regulation.

📊 A recent report by MedicalXpress describes a large study published in JAMA Health Forum examining the link between adolescent cannabis use and later mental health outcomes.

⬜ The study followed about 463,000 adolescents (ages 13–17) from 2016 to 2023.

⬜ Researchers found that teens who used cannabis in the past year had a significantly higher risk — roughly double — of developing psychotic disorders (such as hallucinations or delusions) and bipolar disorder (with or without psychotic features) by age 26.

⬜ They also found increased risks of depression and anxiety among cannabis users.

🟧 High Altitude May Protect Against Diabetes

⬜ researchers discovered that living at high altitudes lowers diabetes risk because low oxygen triggers red blood cells to absorb more glucose, reducing blood sugar.

⬜ Researchers also tested a drug that mimics this effect in mice, which successfully lowered blood sugar and outperformed existing treatments.

⬜ This finding reveals a new role for red blood cells in glucose regulation and may lead to novel diabetes therapies..

Arctic winters are starting to look more like spring.

◽️Arctic winters, especially in Svalbard, are warming rapidly and now resemble early spring.

◽️February 2025 in Ny-Ålesund saw temperatures 12°C above historical averages, with many days above freezing.

◽️Instead of snow, rainfall occurred frequently, accelerating snowmelt and early plant growth.

◽️This warming is not a temporary anomaly but a sign of long-term climate transformation.

◽️Svalbard is warming 6–7 times faster than the global average, with winters heating nearly twice as fast as other seasons.
