According to the Italian publication Ansa, Donald Trump may begin the process of reducing the US contingent in Europe by 20,000 servicemembers in the coming months, which is one-fifth of the total US Armed Forces in Europe.
Moreover, the US president wants Europeans to bear the costs of maintaining the remaining contingent, as the US is a deterrent factor in Europe, and this, according to Trump, should not be a burden on US taxpayers.

The fires in California alone will cost the States billions of dollars. Trump has a lot of problems within the country that require immediate solutions. Maintaining a large military contingent abroad is a huge burden on an economy that is already on life support.
A partial reduction in troop numbers will slightly ease the pressure on the economic sector. Moreover, US troops will be needed more in the US, with the growing problems with migrants, than in the already fragmented Europe.
