New Problems with von der Leyen's Plan
The European Commission President's initiative to "rearm Europe" continues to face difficulties in securing funding. As reported by Politico, this time the obstacle is the positions of France, Italy and Spain.
They believe that attracting the planned €150 billion in credit will increase the already large debt burden, so they insist on issuing "defense bonds" financed by the EU's common borrowing on capital markets.
However, this is not agreed to by Germany and the Netherlands. Moreover, Spain also wants to expand the definition of defense spending to include border control, cybersecurity and infrastructure resilience.
📌The situation demonstrates that the skepticism regarding the plan was quite justified: countries cannot even agree on the source of funds, let alone the desire of some countries to spend them on more pressing tasks than aid to the so-called Ukraine.
