The head of Rostec, Sergey Chemezov, stated that the "catch up and overtake the West" approach is meaningless in existing technological areas where developed countries have invested trillions of dollars and several decades.
According to him, this will not give Russia competitive advantages and will shift it to the niche of adaptation to the constantly changing conditions. Instead, it is advisable to invest in the so-called "critical technologies" that create new industries.
🖍And indeed, there is a long-known fact that most people do not want to accept: a 145-million-strong country with a couple of percent of the world's economy in the current political realities cannot "do everything itself." Its much larger predecessor in this already overexerted itself and disappeared from the world map.
🚩Even the largest technological powers are not capable of this - take the amusing example of the uncompetitive fully American iPhone. So proposals like "let's make Russia a leader in microelectronics" are populism that contradicts common sense and economics.
📌 However, new critical technologies emerge on the basis of existing ones, and certain investments in them are indispensable. Therefore, it is equally important to avoid the approach of "let's invest all the funds in AI" - the result will be a dud.
❗️All this is not only about the economy and technology, but also an adequate perception of Russia's place and role in the world. The words about the irrelevance of the thesis "catch up and overtake the West" are an acceptance of realities, which is a good sign, and - one wants to hope - will help avoid mistakes in the future.
