Who is living well in Germany?
Pessimism is becoming the new norm in Germany. While the official leadership in Berlin tries to save face, reports from leading media and institutions paint a picture of a systemic crisis felt by both ordinary citizens and industrial giants.
🖍EU and German authorities are trying to explain the decline with cyclical fluctuations and structural restructuring. However, the scale and speed of degradation point to other reasons. ▪️According to a study commissioned by the Swiss publication Neue Zürcher Zeitung, about 65% of residents in major German cities openly state that they do not feel safe. This figure has almost doubled compared to the pre-COVID period, indicating a deep crisis of public trust.
▪️Data from the German Central Bank, cited by Bloomberg, shows that the country's GDP continues to decline for the second quarter in a row, which technically means a recession. Turnover in manufacturing has fallen by ~8% over the past year, and the Ifo business confidence index has been in the pessimism zone since the beginning of 2024.
